This segment runs from 29th to 12th Street.
This section of Broadway is the longest segment and has the most diverse collection of land uses and is lined with commercial, civic and industrial properties. Mostly set back off Broadway are historic Black neighborhoods like Russell, Parkland and California. These communities include public parks such as Victory, Elliott and California Parks.
Facing many challenges, this area includes both roadway safety and environmental issues including flooding risk and an urban heat island. This segment also includes numerous community assets like The Nia Center, the 18th Street Bus Rapid Transit Line, Kroger and the Lyles Mall, the Republic Bank Foundation YMCA and global industries like Brown-Forman and Heaven Hill.
Because of the lower traffic volumes in this area, two curbside lanes are recommended for dedicated bus rapid transit lanes. These lanes will allow buses along Broadway, especially Route 23, to move much more efficiently along the corridor, shortening trips, lessening wait times and increasing consistency for bus riders.
The corridor may include dedicated pedestrian space along storefronts and ample space for new amenities like café seating, plaza spaces and sustainable landscape features. The recommendations for this segment address roadway safety by narrowing the traffic lanes, providing medians and pedestrian refuges within the center of the road and by improving intersections and shortening crosswalk distances. Additionally, the proposed new lighting, improved signage and protected bike paths can play a major role in improving safety and the overall human experience along Broadway.
