This segment runs from Southwestern Parkway to 29th Street.
This corridor of Broadway boasts large, mature tree canopy and beautiful historic architecture. Along with the beautiful homes of the Shawnee and Chickasaw neighborhoods are a handful of established neighborhood churches, parks, small businesses, the Yearlings Club and the Shawnee Library. This area is adjacent to both Shawnee and Chickasaw parks and has direct access to the Louisville Loop, the city’s planned 100-mile, multi-use pedestrian and bike path.
The proposed design for this area focuses on improving safety, access to bus stops as well as available amenities, traffic calming and an enhanced pedestrian experience through new public spaces, a shared use path and landscape features.
The recommended design includes a proposed 10-foot-wide shared use path along the northern portion of Broadway that could connect the neighborhoods, parks and community assets. A series of improvements are suggested to provide additional green and amenity spaces.
Safety measures may include traffic-calming solutions such as pedestrian refuges in the median, curb extensions, improved crosswalks, lighting and narrowing of traffic lanes to encourage slower travel speeds.
